Friday morning’s series between Team WE and Young Generation marked the end of the 2017 World Championship Play-In. With the four teams that would be advancing onto the Worlds Group Stage decided — Team WE, Cloud9, 1907 Fenerbahçe and Fnatic — Riot held the tournament’s second group draw to determine where these teams would be place in the next phase of the tournament.
If you’re a fan of close groups and competitive games, the group draw couldn’t have gone better for you. Each of the groups looks difficult now with at least three teams that could make it out.
Cloud9 got placed into what could be one of the tournament's most difficult groups as they face off against defending World Champions SK Telecom as well as China’s number one seed, Edward Gaming. Meanwhile, Fnatic joined Immortals in a group that was always destined to be competing in Longzhu Gaming’s immense shadow.
1907 Fenerbahçe impacted the group they joined the least, but only because it was already the strongest, with three major region teams that could end up proving to be perfectly matched for one another. Finally, Team WE was placed into the same group as the NA LCS number one seed, Team SoloMid, taking Group D from a sure fire win for TSM to a group that no one is getting a free pass through.
