Day one of the 2017 League of Legends World Championships is in the books and for the most part, it went how most people expected. But there was one game that managed to outlive any and all expectations and that was the match up between Fnatic and GIGABYTE Marines.
Coming into Group B this was considered to be one of the most interesting match ups thanks to GAM’s strong showing at the Mid-Season Invitational and Fnatic’s fairly weak Play-In stage. While it did end up being interesting it wasn’t exactly for the reasons everyone expected.
The strangeness started with GIGABYTE Marines star jungler Đỗ “Levi” Duy Khánh picking Nocturne and the team dedicating themselves to a hyper specific early game style centered around getting him ahead. It was unlike anything else we have seen at Worlds so far, and to spoil the rest would be an absolute crime. Of all the matches from day one it’s the one that you absolutely can’t miss.
Honorable mention:
Longzhu Gaming vs Immortals - Group B really delivered on day one with Longzhu and Immortals also providing a great game that stays even until one team makes an explosive and risky call.
