The third day of the 2016 League of Legends quarter finals will feature a face off between two pre-tournament favorites that had difficulty in their group stages with ROX Tigers vs. EDward Gaming. The series will begin Saturday at 6 p.m. ET.
Just like the other quarterfinals this series will be played in a best-of-five format. The games will be streamed live on Twitch and Youtube, or on the Lolesports website.
The winner of this series will go on to face SK Telecom for a shot at the finals next week at Madison Square Garden. For both teams this would be a match up with a storied past, as ROX Tigers have faced — and lost to — SK Telecom frequently in the LCK as well as in the finals of the 2015 World Championships. The last time EDG faced SK Telecom, on the other hand, was the finals of the 2015 Mid-Season Invitational, where Edward Gaming beat SKT 3-2 to hand them their only series loss ever at an international tournament.
The group stage for both of these teams was rather difficult. For the ROX Tigers that difficulty meant losing to both CLG and Albus NoX Luna, as well as falling behind in the early game in almost every match they played over the two week group stage, however they still managed to finish at the top of their group. Edward Gaming on the other hand, only managed a second place finish, losing a tie breaker against H2K. During the first day, EDG suffered one of the biggest upsets in Worlds history — at the time — as they dropped a game to International Wildcard Opponent INTZ e-Sports.
