Teamfight Tactics guide: What does the Spatula actually do?

Here’s how to get the most out of every Spatula in Teamfight Tactics

Riot Games via Polygon

There are plenty of complicated details to figure out about League of Legends’ new auto battler game mode Teamfight Tactics. But for the most part the game does a good job of telling you about those things as you play. There is, however, one exception to that: the Spatula item.

The Spatula is a mysterious item that can be gained either by picking up a unit that has it during the draft phase, or randomly dropped during the game’s AI rounds. The in-game description doesn’t offer any helpful tips, but don’t be fooled, it’s actually the best and most useful item in Teamfight Tactics. Like every other item in the game, adding it to another item creates something new. Unlike the other items, however, most of the things that the Spatula can create effect what a unit’s Class or Origin bonus is.

So, if you have a Spatula and you combine it with a B.F. Sword, you get a Youmuu’s Ghostblade, which can give any champion the addition of the Assassin Class bonus. Want to make your Tristana an Assassin? Give her a Youmuu’s. There’s a useful combination like this for every single item in the game, and the Spatula is the key to all of them.

The Spatula itself is closely related with one of League’s longest running jokes: Urf the manatee. The character — whose name provides the inspiriation for the Ultra Rapid Fire mode — carries a Spatula (who knows why) and is sort of a catch-all for anything random in League, making Urf’s signature weapon the perfect item to act as a wildcard in Teamfight Tactics.

To make these combinations a little bit easier to understand, we’ve put together a full list of every item combination that Spatula has right now, and what exactly the resulting items do:
