Riot announces that ranked seasons will be divided into three splits next year

Riot wants players to be able to monitor their progress.

Riot posted a massive article detailing all the ways the company is looking to improve ranked play in 2019. One of the smaller mentions is the division of each ranked season into three splits.

Riot’s developers understand that players may be a little frustrated that the placement matches can mean so much. Players who get placed low may climb quick, but as Riot puts it, “for many players right now, playing ten games at the beginning of the year earns them the same rewards as their friends who play hundreds of games.” This can lead to a lot of player frustration of their momentum and the rewards they receive.

Riot is going to attempt a fix for this particular problem by dividing the ranked season into three splits. Currently, we have no idea how splits will actually impact the ranked season, but we know the goals that the team has in mind. They want ranked to feel more rewarding more frequently and they seem interested in making ranked a little faster and a little less frustrating.

It’s important to note that players will not have their rank reset between splits. That being said, we’re curious as to what changes will come forward because of the breaks.

Unfortunately, that’s all the info Riot has given out about the new split system for ranked. We’ll have to wait a few more months before we learn anymore.
